A list of essential items for dormitory students: What do you need to prepare after moving to a new dorm?

Things to consider before moving into a new dormitory

Before we go through the list of what to pack, we need to consider the size and space of the room first. Since most dormitories have limited space, we can’t bring in as many large or complex items as we want. So, what should we move into the dorm? A simple tip is to only bring essential daily necessities and school supplies, such as a desk, dining table, microwave, refrigerator, and, most importantly, a mattress. Some dorms provide beds for mattresses, while others don’t provide beds at all. Before moving anything, it’s a good idea to check with the dorm to see what furniture they have available. Then, check to see if there’s enough space for the other items you want to bring.

1. Room cleaning equipment🧹🧼

Moving into a new dorm isn’t just about packing up and leaving your things behind. It’s about  “starting life in a new space,”  where you have to take care of every square inch yourself. Dorms aren’t like hotels where maids come to clean every day. Therefore, having basic cleaning supplies in place from day one is crucial, whether it’s dealing with dust, musty odors, or clutter. Maintaining cleanliness will help you feel more relaxed and comfortable every day.✨

2. Clothing cleaning equipment👕🧺

For dorm students, doing laundry is a responsibility you have to take care of yourself. No one will ever have to remind you, “You can put your clothes in the laundry now!” Having something to make housework like “laundry” easier and more convenient will make your daily life flow more smoothly. Plus, clean clothes will boost your confidence every time you have to go out and meet people.💪

3. Bedding set🛏️🌙

A dorm bed may be simple, but we can transform it into a cozy “resting corner” with familiar items. Preparing the right bedding can help you sleep better and feel more relaxed every night. Good rest affects your brain, mood, and daily life.

4. Equipment for eating + cooking🍽️🍜

Even if your room doesn’t have a kitchen, eating is still a big deal! Dorm life isn’t always convenient, so preparing basic food to eat in your room can help you save money and keep you full on days when you’re too lazy to go out or when it’s raining so hard you can’t order delivery. Whether you’re just eating something simple or setting up a small food corner, it can be a comforting space for dorm students. ❤️

5. Clothing👔👗

Clothes aren’t just items to use; they’re also a reflection of who we are. Especially when you have to go to school, do activities, or meet new friends at university, preparing clothes that are appropriate and complete for your lifestyle will help you feel confident and ready to handle every situation each day. Dressing well doesn’t have to be expensive; it just needs to be ready to use and appropriate for the occasion. ✨👟

6. School supplies📚💻

Living in a dorm, we become the ones managing everything ourselves, including our studies! With no fixed desks or teachers to remind us, having our study materials ready from the start will ensure we don’t lose our rhythm, whether we’re studying online, tutoring for a test, or working on a late-night report. Having tools that help us focus is the key to good grades and personal success. 🎓

7. Bathing equipment🚿🧴

Dormitory bathrooms are private spaces that we use every day. Having complete toiletries will help make your daily life smoother, cleaner, and more comfortable. The freshness after a shower will refresh both your body and mind, ready to start a new day brightly, just like every dorm student. 🌞🛁

8. Common medicines that should be kept in the room💊🤒

No one wants to get sick, but discomfort can come unexpectedly, especially when you’re alone in a dorm room, especially at night when all the pharmacies are closed. Having a basic medicine kit in your room can help you deal with minor symptoms in a timely manner, avoiding worry or discomfort during the time your body needs to recover the most. 🫶

  • headache medicine
  • Antihistamines
  • Cream or gel to apply to reduce pain and fatigue
  • If you have a chronic disease, don’t forget to carry it with you at all times.

9. Other equally important miscellaneous items🧰🔌

While they may seem trivial, these little things can surprisingly help make dorm life run smoother. Sometimes, things we think we’ll “buy later” turn out to be urgent necessities. Having a good inventory of these items in your room will help you be prepared for everything from a minor mishap like a lost charger to unexpected emergencies. 🔦💼

How to pack to prevent damage📦

Once you’ve chosen what you’ll be bringing, the next step is to sort your items by type, such as kitchenware, electrical appliances, clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous items. Pack them in separate boxes or crates for each type. This will save you the hassle of unpacking when you’re packing up your new dorm room, and will make packing easier and faster. Don’t forget to write or mark the contents of each box.

  • Wrap fragile items  – If you have fragile items such as mirrors, plates, or glasses, you should wrap them to prevent damage with newspaper or cloth. Separate them into strong plastic boxes that are easy to transport. When you put them in bags or boxes, it is recommended to mark them so that you can be more careful when handling and moving them.
  • Clothes  – You should use a dustproof plastic box to prevent your clothes from getting dirty during transport. If you don’t have one, you can use a black bag or a large plastic bag.
  • Books   – should be separated by size and should not be packed in crates, as books are heavy and difficult to move. Instead, it is best to pack books in boxes with wheels or suitcases to make them easier to transport.
  • Shoes  – You should store them in a shoe box to prevent them from losing their shape. If you don’t have a shoe box, you can store them together in a larger box. However, you should not store them in a black bag, as this will cause the shoes to overlap and lose their shape.
